The Run That Never Was – 2
"The best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley/An’ leave us naught but grief an’ pain for promis’d joy!"
Rarely have the words of the great bard seemed as appropriate as they did on Sunday afternoon, as we missed out on The Run That Never Was for the second time in as many months.
It’s not easy to know where to start with this one. Normally you would think – at the beginning. And there’s the rub. It might be easier just to say: The Run That Never Was, never was, and leave it at that.
For those of you that missed the first one – we got to within about 5km of the start but the bus wouldn’t go any further along the narrow country roads so we had to make up a new route on the spot.
This time we we took the more obvious route and got a lot closer. The running hare even got around to announcing a 5-minute warning a couple of kilometres from the start and then – we went right past the turn off. So, a 25km long cut it was. Only 2 dodgy bridge crossings and we’d be right, right? Well, not exactly. The first bridge proved too dodgy, so back we went to try again to find the A point. Alas, the weight warnings and new, stricter traffic regulations prevented us getting to the start. We journeyed on to ry and find a place, any place, suitable for the bus to stop. Eventually we found one, but, of course, it was too far from the start to do the original route. Luckily, there were a few interesting looking options and off we went in search of some kind of trail. As luck would have it we ended up doing a fairly pleasant, albeit short, route among some of the friendliest local people ever seen on a hash. We even managed to fit in a beer stop so not all bad.
Back to the bus and special mention should be made to Cherry Ho, No Loan For You and One At A Time for making sure we were all well banh mi-ed. Some charges and icings were handed out for misdemeanours committed with Paddy Fag and Broken Seal officiating.
A relatively straight forward drive back to HCMC followed with an On-On at the usual place.
Well done to everyone for making the best of it and apologies to the hashers who made their own way to the start point.
Hares beware – this was a starting point that we used about 18 months ago without issue. Things have changed since then so make sure start points are bussable.
